What effect does that have on a building? With a higher heat gain, it takes a longer time for heat to dissipate from the inside. An air conditioner then has to run a longer cycle, consuming more energy. Not only that, this also means that the HVAC system must work harder every day, resulting in more wear and tear, more repairs and possibly a shorter life span.
As lighter colors reflect solar heat instead of absorbing and retaining it, heat gain is reduced. There’s less heat and the air conditioner can run shorter cycles, which can result in lower monthly AC bills.
