Did you know that one of the best ways to keep your building energy efficient has nothing to do with what’s on the inside? That’s right, an energy efficient building starts on the outside – with its paint. But… not just any paint. It has to be the right color.
How does that work? We explain it in today’s quick read.
Energy Efficiency And Paint Color
To put it simply, darker shades absorb more light and, therefore, absorb more heat. Lighter shades reflect heat and tend to stay a few degrees cooler.
What effect does that have on a building? With a higher heat gain, it takes a longer time for heat to dissipate from the inside. An air conditioner then has to run a longer cycle, consuming more energy. Not only that, this also means that the HVAC system must work harder every day, resulting in more wear and tear, more repairs and possibly a shorter life span.
As lighter colors reflect solar heat instead of absorbing and retaining it, heat gain is reduced. There’s less heat and the air conditioner can run shorter cycles, which can result in lower monthly AC bills.
How To Choose The Most Energy Efficient Paint Color For Your Building
Which color is right for your building? It depends on where you live and what your goals are.
So, if you’re looking to reduce heating bills and make your building a little warmer, go for darker shades. To keep your building cool, a light color is your best bet.
For us here in sunny south Florida, it goes without saying that we definitely want to keep those cooling costs down! White, light gray and light neutrals would all be great choices for the exterior walls of a building down here.
